PAHs, short for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, can also be referred to as polycyclic aromatic compounds, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These are aromatic hydrocarbons composed of multiple aromatic rings that do not contain heteroatoms or substituents, with over 100 chemical structures classified under this category. In nature, most of them are found in coal and tar oil, and are produced by the combustion of organic substances, such as engines or forest fires.
There are many known or potential hazardous aromatic rings, so German GS-mark starts to control the presence of 18 PAHs in products. In 2019, definitions were revised specifically for children's products and toys.
There are 18 controlled toxic PAHs substances with content restrictions divided into three categories:
Category 1: Materials intended to be put into the mouth, or materials in toys according to Directive 2009/48/EC, or materials in articles for use by children up to three years of age with long-term skin contact (longer than 30s) when used as intended. Sum of 18 PAHs must be smaller than 1mg/kg;
Category 2: Materials that are not covered by Category 1, with long-term skin contact (longer than 30s) or repeated short-term skin contact if used as intended or foreseeable. Sum of 18 PAHs must be smaller than 10mg/kg;
Category 3: Materials that are not covered by Category 1 or 2, with short-term skin contact (up to 30s) when used as intended or foreseeable. Sum of 18 PAHs must be smaller than 50mg/kg.
LeeKuma’s main products, such as inflation tubes used for bicycle tires and sports balls, are items that often come into direct contact with the skin during use. Therefore, our R&D team has developed a rubber formula that complies with Category II, Type B of the PAHs regulations to meet global customer needs and ensure the safety of both current and future generations.
